Doctors “Astounded”: Long-Held Belief About Coffee and Heart Rhythm Was Wrong

What belief?

people with heart conditions such as A-Fib are often told to avoid caffeine because it might worsen symptoms. (A-Fib), a common heart rhythm problem that causes a fast, irregular heartbeat and can increase the risk of stroke or heart failure.

Another medical "belief" with elusive provenance.

In a surprising finding, the first randomized clinical trial revealed that drinking a cup of coffee each day reduces the risk of atrial fibrillation. Regular coffee consumption may actually help protect against atrial fibrillation . A collaborative study conducted by the University of California, San Francisco, and the University of Adelaide found that drinking one cup of caffeinated coffee per day lowered the risk of A-Fib by 39%.

Mine's the Mocha with an extra shot, chocolate and cinnamon.

This is an AE-caused condition. Health matters are always a mix of science and morality. Often old wives' tales based round the rule:

If it's enjoyable, it's bad for you.

In the drinks cabinet, coffee joins alcohol and artificial sweeteners as constantly swinging between acceptable and unacceptable, this much but not this much.

Though the biggest one of all is the constant and completely untested adjuration to 'drink x pints of water every day', followed by a warning that the water may not come in the form of hot drinks, fizzy pop, beer etc.

There have been studies to find out if caffeine affects the absorption of calcium and vitamin D which seem to conclude that they're inconclusive, e.g. low calcium levels can be offset by, err, drinking milk and Vit D levels were measured in Saudi adults (and children) who drink a lot of coffee but perhaps don't go out in the midday sun.

I can certainly hold my hand up to that last bit of advice. Except today when I venture out to Tesco for the weekly shop, bareheaded for all the world to see. Though me rickets are playing up summin' awful.
