Not sure, it's only about 500 years old, and Lion symbolism was fairly prevalent in Spain (eg Kingdom of Leon) and in fact Puerto Rico was conquered and colonised by, in part, a Juan Ponce de León.

This is not related to lions but something me and Hatty dived into (literally, as you will see) some time ago. It's probably best known from

Lyonesse is a kingdom which, according to legend, consisted of a long strand of land stretching from Land's End at the southwestern tip of Cornwall, England, to what is now the Isles of Scilly in the Celtic Sea portion of the Atlantic Ocean.

It is related, we know not how, to various other markers of western extremities of land (Land's End, Finistère, Fisterra). Leon is the northwest corner of the Iberian peninsula. Lihou Island is the northwest corner of the Channel Islands (which has a Venus Pool q.v.).

There were others but I can't remember them offhand. (I hope, otherwise this might be a bogus list.)

A Celtic coin. Notice under the horse.

For ortho numismatics, I would guess it's a copy, of a copy, of a copy, of a biga, two wheeled chariot and rider.

I've recently found what I think is the most interesting ancient artefact I've ever seen. That said, Mick described it as a dog's breakfast. (to understand my point of view, you need to hear a whole bunch of other info, but I'll spare you).

Because it's interesting even without more context, here's the artefact, discovered in Cyprus and said to be 1500 years old:

And here's what the source below says about it:
“[the palindrome] roughly translates to:

“Iahweh [a god] is the bearer of the secret name, the lion of Re secure in his shrine.”

Yahweh being the Lion of Re is, I think, a Gnostic conception. Interesting that it mixes Yahweh, Egypt's Re (Ra, I think), and a Lion, which I would guess means Zurvan, the lion-headed Saturn-type god in Persia.

The image allegedly comprises:
three main images, one of the ancient Egyptian god Osiris lying in a boat, a cynocephalus, or a god with the head of a dog, and the body of a man and the ancient Greek god of silence, Harpocrates, sitting on a stool.

A crocodile, snake, moon, and star are also shown on the amulet.

Osiris, who is depicted on the amulet wrapped up like a mummy, was the Egyptian god of the underworld.

Does anyone here see a "cynocephalus"?

We treated Rover as a god in my house growing up. And he had a dog's head.
