My seven-year-old allowed me to read him The Hobbit, the first book of the LotR trilogy, and then all but the last hundred pages of the second book. He said it was too scary and it was keeping him from sleeping. He asked me to keep reading it and tell him how it ended (i'm obliging).
But what I learned from these books is that Tolkien knew every single landscape formation imaginable (at least in England, if not Doggerland). This included moors, meres, fens, pales, dales, vales, grimpens, and dingles.
