As you know, I agree with all this (in general, if not necessarily in detail). Like you, I use references to early Christianity either as the red flag of bogosity or as a guide to when they were written (and, as you say, why they were written). It's just dating itself I don't find very helpful.

One thing that is, is the language historical documents are written in. Latin itself is not very helpful -- though it might be if we ever really got to grips with the various forms -- but once all ideas of early written French, English, Welsh and Irish are discarded (together with anything of any date in Anglo-Saxon and Gothic) you're definitely in revisionist heaven.
