As the good ship Lollipop... er... book Revisionist Historiography puts it
Archaeologists do not subscribe to ‘Is it true of you’ principles. They regard the past as a foreign country, a country lived in by people obsessed with ritual practices to judge by how many ritual centres archaeologists excavate. Especially British archaeologists because their fair land positively pullulates with impressive megalithic structures that seem to have no purpose other than ritual ones. But in this case, archaeologists do know they don’t know. In fact they’ve gone quite the other way and obsess non-stop about what the megaliths were for, coming up with ever more extravagant reasons with every passing generation. |
