No idea, Grant, as I haven't seen the advert(s) but presumably the fact you're so bemused is a sign of their success.

BBC4 recently showed a Belgian crime drama called Professor T but for a change the neurotic police chief was male. There was good reason for his behaviour but by the time the viewers and his colleagues had got sick of him he went on leave, got himself sorted and returned, seemingly recovered. The other characters acted weirdly but were funny. Perhaps it's not OK to joke about neuroses in other countries.

Foreigners are so neurotic they don't even know it. Imagine waking up one morning and finding you're a foreigner.

We watched Bent Copper sorry Bancroft last night. It starts with a pretty young thing walking down the road to the strains of Seal.

Brother, brother
Sister, sister

It's the loneliness that's the killer

So you want
To be free
To live your life
The way you wanna be
Will you give
If we cry?
Will we live
Or will we die?

She dies. Who would have thought it.

Fast forward another bored ambitious blond, is being lectured by old hand Ade Edmondson on the rise of Stalin. This sort of thing goes on a lot in the British Police force. You gotta know your Stalin least if you want to improve yourself. It was nice to see Ade return to comedy.

The whole thing was unbelievably bad, but then something strange happens, we start to find out about Bancroft, and boy can this woman Sarah Parish act. It's like Thandie Newton all over again, in fact Bancroft is Roz Huntley.......

We just need a (Kate Fleming) Vicky McClure for the first smell of petrol.

The Miniaturist

Spoilers

BBC ran with the Miniaturist this year. This was a beautiful adaption of a novel set in seventeenth century Amsterdam, full of period detail, atmosphere, secrets, lies and incredible twists.....

Actually it was Horseshit. A sort of Mills and Boon for the politically correct super rich.

In short, innocent cute Nella marries illustrious and handsome Merchant Johannes Brandt, as a wedding gift he gives her a posh dolls house which is a miniature re-creation of her new home.

Dolls houses at that time were training gifts for small girls to learn how to control servants, run the posh home etc, so floppy hat off to Johanes , short of giving her a chip fryer this couldn't have been a more patronising choice for his new beloved.

Anyway dutifully Nella actually goes along with this and enlists the services of a Minaturist (of the title) to populate the house, and this is where the mystery elements are introduced. The pieces that arrive are exact replicas of the objects and people in the house (geddit) and they are revealing to Nella some forbidden secrets. What is imaginary what is real ?

It's an interesting premise only spoiled by the fact that Nella learns that you can be happy as a fag hag, persecuting gays is wrong, extreme wealth earnt via the slave trade is ok, but only if you adopt a African as a servant, colour is better than black and white, being caged up is not good, ......ie all the modern borgeois values and anxieties of super rich families. "OMG Aunty is wearing racist jewelry!"

Next year a young boy gets some tin soldiers.

Yes, I gave up too and switched to Paddington Bear--The Movie. There were some plot implausibilities but one chase sequence starting in the Portobello Market went past my house so it must be based on a true story. I had no child with me so was able to have a little blub from time to time.

The problem with MacMafia is that the writer clearly knows roughly as much as I do about international gangsterism. Nothing surprising about that--we writers live sheltered lives--but you are supposed to hide this fact from your audience by at least a little bit of mystification.

McMafia is based on a book by Misha Glenny, a BBC correspondent and

a British journalist who specialises in southeastern Europe, global organised crime, and cybersecurity.

UKLFI (UK Lawyers For Israel), an influential (hah) group, is lambasting the Beeb for the programme's 'anti-Semiticism' according to The Daily Mail

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5232503/BBC-hit-complaints-anti-Semiticism-drama-McMafia.html

The prominence of Russian-Israeli gangsters on the show comes from Glenny’s material.

In his book, he writes about the rise of organised crime in Israel following the huge influx of Russian-Jews into the country following the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The character of Semiyon Kleiman, played by American actor David Stathairn, appears to be an amalgamation of various criminals - including Ze’ev Rosenstein, a notorious Israeli drug kingpin who is featured in the book.

Rosenstein, who was born in Tel Aviv to a Romanian Jewish father and a Mountain Jewish mother, was a burglar who later moved into ecstasy distribution.

Although not Russian, like Kleiman, he dabbled in politics, which often intersected with crime in Israel, according to Glenny.

In the two episodes so far shown, the Jewish crooks get non-Jewish accomplices (Arabs and Czechs) to do the rough stuff. Rather lenient towards Israelis in the circs.

For every Weinstein there is a Allen.

I admire the candor of Mira Sorvino.

Anthony Julius, a leading lawyer who writes about English antisemitism, claims Kingsley Amis told Martin Amis to be 'mildly anti-Semitic' and note the number of Jewish names in the credits of TV programmes, reported a book reviewer in The Telegraph. Amis père might have added that the prevalence of Jews in the television industry has consciously or not influenced the way Jewish experiences are transmitted to audiences.

The classic case of English antisemitism cited by Julius is the York massacre of 1190 for which there is no reliable evidence (though no doubt twelfth-century Jewish residents along with other minorities were murdered on occasion). It would take a Jewish historian such as Prof Weinstein (Helen, not Harvey) to discredit the massacre story. To be entitled to comment on Jewish history, 12th or 21st century, you need Jewish credentials as Sir Kingsley seems to have nearly said.

I'm enjoying these posts about anti-Semitism. Mild anti-Semitism is very fashionable online at the moment. Especially in alternative circles (circles I'm often in). The problem I have is that I don't know a single Jewish person in real everyday life. So a fresh perspective is useful. Normally I just ask people. For example, with Muslims I'll just ask them outright about the whole "terrorism" thing. I've never met one so far with any first, or even secondhand experience of "radicalisation" - so that makes me doubtful of the TV image.

On the one hand it's obviously wrong to point the finger at an entire race or religious group. However, at the same time it's hard to ignore the sheer number of Jewish people towards the top end of things. And because of the label "anti-Semite" it's impossible to have an honest conversation about it.

There's organised crime in all communities and societies. So it stands to reason there must be some in Jewish communities ..but it can never be pointed out (unless the person pointing it out wants to look like a Nazi of course).

In fact, returning to Muslims, in my local area Muslim criminals tend to run the drugs trade these days - it used to be white gangs doing this when I was growing up. This change is partly because the (mainly white) police are scared for PC reasons to harass Muslims. So they just let them get on with things. Similar to the child-grooming scandal. Maybe Jewish criminals have a similar competitive advantage?

Again though I have zero firsthand experience so I do like hearing other intelligent opinions on the topic.

The problem I have is that I don't know a single Jewish person in real everyday life.

As a heavyweight intellectual living in a WASP country, I don't know a single non-Jewish person in real everyday life. Not of course that there are any Jews in Middlesborough. Which reminds me, there was a solecism in Vera this week. It was only a short scene but the sun was clearly shining.

On the one hand it's obviously wrong to point the finger at an entire race or religious group

Firstly, it is not at all obvious and secondly, if it is, all the more reason for AE-ists to provisionally start doing just that.

You think whites resent Jews? Wait until the Asians (orientals) take over.

In Britain that would not be a problem. Husbands and wives rarely communicate. As the French put it

Why do the English allow their dogs in the house?
They 'ave to 'ave somebody to talk to.
