It occurs to me that Europe is a) so desirous of not having economic migrants turning up in such vast numbers but b) even more desirous to avoid being criticised for adopting 'populist' anti-migrant measures, that it is our task to provide them with a cover story. Wiley's theory doesn't have to be true to work. "In order to stem funds going to militias in Africa we regretfully have to announce that all migrants arriving via people-smuggling routes will be returned to their country of origin." Etc, etc.

It's really an example of Wiley's preference for circular thinking. There are cover stories out there. The most common I hear, is that "we are taking skilled and semi skilled workers from abroad from countries that need them more" and of course it contains an element of truth, these young risk takers will make good British ( they do not in general think of themselves as English) workers. They become doctors and carers, hospitality workers, or taxi drivers. No doubt many would be successful and contribute greatly in their country of origin. It is just not their dream.

I'd better mark your cards on the Brexit negotiations. Everyone is desperate to have smooth no-ructions access to the other side but...

1) the Brits have to have a fig leaf to persuade the Brits this isn't just being in the EU without the nobs
2) the Euros have to have a fig leaf to persuade the Euros that leaving the EU is no picnic

Which side gets the fig leaf nearest the one it wants depends on how much British fishing the Brits are going to allow the Euros. Except that's the fig leaf to rule them all.

If you want to be truly cynical: continue the current obstacle race to ensure you get the best risk takers. Then offer them a deal: either
a) you go into a hostel, work illegally and generally lead a scumbag life until your case is heard
b) we give you the legitimate works but only if you agree to go home in five (renewable to ten?) years.

The liberals will lap it up. Will they go home after five/ten years? I suppose that is a problem but who cares? We need people like that. We could always send the liberals to help out in the countries they profess to love.

But if the liberals really cared about third world countries, surely they would prefer it if these exemplars of the Protestant work ethic stayed in their own countries and helped out at home. Liberals want immigration because they hate their own country and those Brexit supporting working class. How better to stick it to them than import millions of immigrants to reduce working class labour costs. If the immigrants were going to compete with journalists and lawyers it would be a different story

I have consulted a wide range (ha!) of liberals and they say with one voice that you are right, Grant, they hate their country, they hate the Brexit-supporting working class, and they want to stick it to them by reducing their wages. To their credit this came as a surprise to many of them.

Search "Andrew Neather" who admitted that the purpose of mass immigration during the Blair era was to "rub the Right's nose in diversity and render their arguments out of date"

All right, I did. So your argument, Grant, is the whole thing was originally a put-up job to dish the Tories and this is a secret so well kept that only an insider of twenty years ago has managed to blow the whistle and even then nobody except you noticed that the plot had finally been dragged into the light of day.

Meanwhile, the Tories themselves are following the exact same polices as the ones designed to dish them and so is every other country in Europe. Yes, I see it all now.

There is really no difference between Labour and the Tories so of course they follow the same strategy. The only difference is the Tories pretend to be a conservative party to get votes. Surely you must have noticed they never actually do anything conservative.

People pretending to be conservative in order to get conservative votes. How, in practice, is this different from actual conservatives doing things to get the conservative vote?

Why is everyone so obsessed with micro-managing everyone else? The EU is plonking sanctions on Belarus. What's it got to do with them? Is Lukashenko creating vast hordes of refugees spilling over into EU territory or something? If he's so awful why haven't they mentioned it for the last thirty years? The EU would prefer someone else running Belarus. Bully for you. Are you going to put sanctions on her when she does an Aung San Suu Kyi on you? Or, worse, pulls a Ukraine and the whole shooting match degenerates into dismemberment and chaos.

The government of countries is a delicate ecology, let them work it out for themselves. They may not know best but they sure as hell know more about their country than you do. Ditto that fine body of corrupt and ineffectual leaders that make up ECOWAS. They've just slapped sanctions on Mali because it had the temerity to get rid of its own corrupt and ineffectual leader. They've told the soldiers, "You've got a year." Before what? Before installing another corrupt and ineffectual leader of course.

MJH tells EU & ECOWAS to EFFOV.

It's a late summer Saturday in Minsk, prime demonstration day, and all there is is a few thousand young, clearly middle class women on the streets. It's all over bar the shouting. Better luck next time.

The first sign today that Scotland might be ready for independence. Nicola Sturgeon addressed her nation without being accompanied by a person rendering her words into sign language.

About one per cent of her audience are deaf. About one per cent of the deaf are unable to lip read a person full face speaking slowly and deliberately. It is inconceivable that anybody who has learned the one cannot do the other. The other ninety-nine point nine per cent of Nicola's audience would love to be able to listen to her words without being distracted by someone signing.

Countries must be governed for the many not the few and siren voices demanding that the entire country halts in its tracks because someone somewhere might be mildly inconvenienced must not be paid any attention. Or they are paid off, it depends. It has taken many years for the Scottish government to recognise this, and they are now ready to take the next step.

It was wonderfully stirring to watch and hear the Mongolians of Inner (i.e. Chinese) Mongolia standing firm against Han Chinese imperialism on the news tonight. Depressing too, we all know what's coming.

More riots on the streets of the capital as Montenegrins rise up in protest against the prospect of a pro-Serb/anti EU government after a pro-Serb/anti-EU coalition was voted into office by the Montenegrins.

So what's Boris up to this time? Does he really intend to finish Britain's Honest Joe rep for ever, torpedo the Eurotalks in a way that everybody knows who's the bad guy and smash the prospects of a US trade deal so that cows do not need to have their udders inspected as they cross the Irish Sea (or whatever)? Well, here's the genius of his position. He might just be that stupid.

"Do what I say or I shoot the dog."
"But he's your dog."
"Awfully cute though, ain't he?"
