This I do like. Oh, the wickedness. Remember the Philip Morris CEO swearing to Congress that cigarettes weren't habit-forming?
Further usage of diammonium phosphate allowed Marlboro to free base the nicotine in tobacco, allowing for a more efficient delivery. Marlboro kept this process secret for many years, as freebasing is the same process used to produce crack cocaine from normal cocaine. |

This is pretty mild stuff, the most successful campaign according to Wiley was Tony The Tiger.
Doctor Kellogg a committed vegetarian, remodelled the American breakfast away from meat as he was convinced meat and spicy foods for breakfast led to masturbation.
Wiley remains a big fan of the bacon sandwich with HP sauce..

"Mum, why can't we have Frosties?"
"Put sugar on them. It's just the same."
I'm making up for it now. Now and again.

My morning Google Alert continues to delight and despond. Today I get the glad tidings that M J Harper is cited in a Wikibio of some dim and distant saint. Recognition not before time, I might add.
Smith, David M. (1995). "The Officialis of the Bishop in Twelfth- and Thirteenth-Century England: Problems of Terminology". In Franklin, M. J.; Harper-Bill, Christopher (eds.). Cinnamon Tear & Share Bun |
It was only when I got home I remembered I had no one to tear and share it with. Is it too late to take it back? Yes, all gone.

At least twenty, possibly thirty, years ago I found myself trapped for several weeks in a people carrier with an American teenager who was addicted to a pop group called Slipknot. Due to her mother being bigger than me I had to listen to Slipknot for several weeks. Therefore I became addicted to Slipknot. Now I find them playing at a pop festival near me. I won't be going but it's good to hear we're all still going.

The Donmar Theatre is trialling a scheme in which it flags on its website productions that might cause offence. Guardian |
I'm old enough to remember when the Donmar wouldn't be doing a play unless it caused offence.

The last book that made me cry
The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro. The last few pages were absolute agony. I realised, only then, what the title meant and the whole thrust of the book and this man’s unfulfilled life. I could hardly bear it. I closed it before the end so that I didn’t have to be there with him. Kit de Waal Guardian |
This is a typical writer-on-writer view. It just doesn't happen in real life. That butler bloke (Anthony Hopkins) knew just what he was doing and getting it on with Emma Thomson would have lasted all of two days. On both sides. Writers can't stand real life for an obvious reason. Altogether now: The truth is always boring.

It is. I am mildly outraged that you needed to ask. Though William of Ockham said it first in a different way. Not that anybody has taken the slightest notice of either of us.

Not true. Wiley noticed. Although, to be fair he thought you had based it all on a Bell Curve.
Mind you if you wrote "the truth is always a bell curve", someone would have pointed out it wasn't, because this only applies to a normal distribution.

I'm not a racist but a black James Bond is a step too far. It's historically inaccurate for a start. And who's Lashana Lynch when he's at home? What's wrong with that other chap? Denzil something.
